Just think about the last time you made art. Likely, you were very present with it, focused, and possibly there was an emotion that went with your creativity. It seems to me that what you did was actively engage your mind and body, hands, and thoughts into every moment of making your artwork. Art is a process, and therefore, it feels acceptable -at least in informal settings- to use "art" as a verb.
